Each year in the United States there are an estimated 80,000 Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries despite advancements in diagnostics and treatment of these injuries.  ACL injuries come at a cost of one billion dollars each year.  Medical professionals have focused on the potential risk factors and mechanisms of these injuries in an effort to minimize their occurrence.  Athletes age 15-25, that are involved in pivoting sports, such as basketball, are at the highest risk of ACL injury.  Females are at an even greater risk in part due to hormone fluctuations and musculoskeletal imbalances. View Full Post

Many times I am presented with an injury situation where an athlete sustains an injury playing a high school sport and is also simultaneously participating in a club sport, such as soccer or volleyball.  How do I treat that injury, yet monitor their progress and participation in their club sport?  As a Certified Athletic Trainer it is difficult to manage situations such as these.  Young athletes who participate in multiple sports at once are at risk of overuse injuries if they do not get sufficient rest between daily activities or if they do not get a break between seasons. View Full Post
